3 Essential Tips for Reading Tarot at Parties

February 10, 2016 by Ronn Sussberg

tarot cards
Hard Work and Luck

Congratulations! You’ve just been asked to read tarot for entertainment at a party. Maybe it’s just amongst a small gathering of friends; maybe it’s a festive bridal shower will folks you haven’t met. Whoever the crowd and whatever the atmosphere, be prepared for an exciting night of clarity and guidance.

Tarot cards are how divine sources of information from within communicate with one’s Higher Self through the Tarot aids.

“Remember, you’re there for spiritual awakening, not just entertainment. It might be hard to imagine that meditative clarity can be found it a smoky bar or a loud late-night party. Remember, tarot parties can happen anywhere. As an invited guest, you are not in control of the settings. Not every reading can be in a small, aesthetically pure, candelit, setting.  There may be kids running around; imagine a pool in a friends’ backyard on a windy, breezy summer night. The elements are fickle.  So, prepare accordingly. Find out what kind of space will you have. Some questions to ask; will you be outside or indoors? Will you be provided a seating arrangement? If it’s going to be outside, make sure to bring some transparent paper weights to prevent the cards from shuffling away in the wind.

Here are some tips to guide you through the night.

1. Bring your Energy with you

Just because you are giving your readings in a new place doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your usual effects. I suggest bringing along your favorite accessories and decor with you to give the event your own touch. This could be as much as your personal tablecloth and privacy screen, or maybe just some photographs from a prayer shrine.

2. Think simple

You’re coming to your readers, they’re not reaching out to you. So their time is precious. They may not want to hear a whole interpretation. They may prefer to head back to the party. One way to keep guests interested is to stick to a set of 2-3 cards. This may feel unnatural for many readers, but sticking with just a small handful keeps the reading playful and interesting. Remember to end the reading with an oracle card to leave guests with a hopeful message. I like to bring small notecards so you can jot down the predictions and guests can take them with them as a token of an inspired Tarot reading.

3. Get organized before the event

If you’re a regular at events and parties, you know how hectic everything can be once the festivities get started. This is why you need to be the director of your payment. You need to be on task of your time. Keep your readings between 15-25 minutes and make sure you wear a watch to plan this. Communicate this time limit with the client so they are aware that they might be cut off. This preparation is essential for the health of the readings and to ensure a fun event for all.

Getting Your Audience to Participate

December 10, 2015 by Ronn Sussberg

Events are all about the attendees.  The best events focus on the audience and utilize exciting techniques to encourage participate and natural engagement.  Here are some ways to make your event truly memorable, inspiring connection with the material and between guests.

1. Seat Swap

This is old hat but always works to recharge the room.  In between main course and dessert, when conversation tends to dwindle, announce a seat swap, where attendees have to switch their seats.  What’s the best way to organize this?  Ask only the men or women to switch. Or, split attendees by asking those with last names in the first part of the alphabet to switch. Surprise your guests, but don’t be too disruptive with your swapping.

2. Tag, you’re it

While some event coordinators think name tags are passé, name badges are a great way to break the ice.  Be creative with it.  Hand out large blank cards that give attendees enough space to add their own flavor.  Try open-ended introductions like

“Tell me about…”

“I study..”

“World’s Greatest”

These are a lot more fun than “My name is…”

Another idea that is now popular at Tech events is including a scannable bar code that users can use with their mobile devices to connect to each other’s websites.

3. Body Voting

Getting up and moving around will energize your audience. Here are some examples of “body-voting.”

You can show the amount of experience in the room.  First,  ask the audience to think of their quantitative years of experience.  Then, have them line up across the room in this numerical order.

Ask a handful of people at the higher end of experience end to recite their years of experience as answers for the whole group.

Next, ask people at the middle of the line to repeat their years of experience just as the higher end did.

Multiply this number by the number of total participants. The difference of collective people minus years of experience in the room will be higher than any one or two people’s experience.  This is a fun group activity and will be sure to get people chatting about their work experience.

The key to keeping your audience happy is letting them communicate with one another. If they’re moving around the room and enjoying chatting with each other, you’re doing a good job.

The Event Planning Checklist:

November 6, 2015 by Ronn Sussberg

Event planning all starts with a great idea. Maybe it’s a gala with prestigious guests to benefit a local non-profit. Or it’s an all-day music festival with thousands of attendees.  You and your team anticipate the day itself with a different kind of excitement than the people who attend it. This is your work, and every move you make behind the scenes has a ripple effect.

However, event planning is one of the most stressful industries to be in. As an event-planner, we would we lost without the hectic logistics and marketing required to execute these extravagant events.

We thrive on this stress.  Here is a checklist to keep your head screwed on tight during busy events.

Dont’s

  • Don’t rely on event organizers: There are many entry-level employees that are eager to help and contribute, but delegating too much responsible to someone who may be immature runs you the risk of losing control of the event and causing you more stress. Work directly with partners in order to develop awesome events.
  • Don’t involve guests in your drama:  Something to be aware of is that it is inappropriate to expose your guests to the behind-the-scenes drama of the logistics of event planning in front of your guests. Many event planners problem-solving skills and forget that their guests are there to enjoy themselves.

Do’s

  • Assume that everything that can go wrong, will go wrong:  Events are people-focused. People change their minds! Therefore, our events and plans surrounding the events change too.
  • Streamline your registration process: Long gone are the days of troublesome paper sign-ins and tickets for guests. Invest in easy iPad systems to accelerate entry process and clear the path from crowds.
  • Try something new: Don’t forget why you got involved in the industry in the first place – to break ground with your creative energy. Keep sharing your brand and always encourage yourself to learn new things so your style does not become stagnant. Hold your events to new standards instead of doing the same old thing.

Survival Guide Continued

September 15, 2015 by Ronn Sussberg

Let’s continue with our tips from last post about how to conserve your energy while running a long event.

Technology is your friend. If there is a way to notify your personnel when a VIP or speaker enters the room so they can ensure, first hand, the guest is having a good time, that could be very beneficial. Is there a way to send notifications when the next session of an event is about to start? If the venue is large, is there an interactive map that can plan the most efficient route?

On event days, if there is an opportunity to sit- take it! These opportunities are usually few and far between so don’t feel guilty about taking it. Give your staff time to rest also. Make sure there is a private area for them to switch off, even if only for a brief time period to freshen up or grab something to eat. If you are taking a break yourself, make sure someone can take over in your absence.

Don’t forget to eat. Water is your best friend and essential fuel, always, and especially on event days.

Think about any information you might need during the event. Make sure you’ll have access to these documents or schedules or phone numbers on the day of the event.

On the day of the event, there might be extra tasks that could easily get accomplished with a volunteer or two. Ask a friend or family member to come help out just in case. This is also like backup in case someone cannot make it on the day of the event.

It can help to break down the event into smaller events and delegate these to your support staff. It takes the whole burden off you or off one person.

Just in case there is a desired change on the day of the event, make sure you have commands for your staff so they are ready to execute.

After the event, if it is a multi day event, make sure to rest up each night so you’re not hating yourself in the morning. If it’s the actual end of the event, give yourself a pat on the back! Reward yourself for the hard work and successful event!

The Survival Guide for Long Live Event Days

September 2, 2015 by Ronn Sussberg

Live event days tends can be exhausting, especially if they last all day! Yet you still have to make it through the day with a smile on your face. How can you conserve both your mental and physical energy so that you can exert it when it is required?

Those who have experienced 14 hour event days understand. If you are going to attend or run a day-long event again, here are some tips for next time:

Prior to the event, stay over near the venue. If you are already going to be working all day, don’t start the day earlier than you need by commuting a far distance. Make time to eat breakfast in a non-rushed, non-flustered fashion. Enjoy your morning.

As for preparation, make sure there is no preparation necessary for the day of the event.

It is ideal if the venue can fit all the guests on one level. This helps with the flow of the attendees but also makes a difference for those setting up.

Prior to the event, make sure you’re in shape! Keep your body fit so you don’t experience aches and pains from standing all day at the event.

During the Event, shoes. Shoes are so important. Make sure you’re wearing comfortable shoes that you could happily walk a mile in. Wear comfortable clothes too. Prepare for varying temperature. Lighting can create heat and air conditioning can be kicked into full gear; you never know.

If there are a lot of working parts to your event, you may want to use radios to communicate easily to those also working the event. Save your legs if you can! And spread out the personnel in a way that makes sense.

On event days, use the elevator. Using stairs is always a great way to get in a little extra movement but on the day of an event, you are already moving much more than you realize. If you tire too early, that is much worse than taking the elevator for one day.

I’ll have more tips in the next post!

7 Elements that Make for a Great Corporate Party

August 17, 2015 by Ronn Sussberg

Companies are starting to host corporate parties to for the purpose of networking and building customer relationships. According to a study, the meeting industry contributes $106 billion to the GDP (Gross Domestic Product).

A great way to plan a corporate event is to satisfy the following elements:

  1. Vision: Prior to planning, clearly define the goals and objectives for the event by consulting with your client. Keep your notes about all conversations with vendors and with your client.
  2. Budget: When setting a budget, be aware of the following: promotional/marketing expenses, venue rental, security, catering, alcohol, booklets, name tags, printing, paying for speakers or special guests, table décor, entertainment, photography, event insurance
  3. Venue: Consider the size and location of the venue. Is it easy accessible? Will there be enough room for all the guests, comfortably? If the venue is outdoors, be sure to account for the weather.
  4. Timeline: Create a schedule of events and share it will all vendors. This will encourage you to follow the schedule yourself. On your timeline you should include: venue set-up, guest arrival, cocktail and dinner serving times, speakers or presentation times, closing ceremonies, clean-up and any other details that are unique to each event
  5. Décor: Develop a theme for the event, in accordance to the vision of your client. Check Pinterest for some ideas or color combinations. Are there any special touches you can add to make the event stand out.
  6. Catering: Never skimp on the food, especially when planning a corporate party. The food should be of good quality and presented nicely. No one has time for bad food. Also try to offer a variety of foods to make sure there is something for everyone.
  7. Entertainment: This can make or break an event. If you have music, make sure it compliments the theme of the party. If you have live music, listen to a sample before. Caricature artists, photographers and of course, psychics, can be great additions to the event.

Great Apps for Event Planners (including Weddings)

August 11, 2015 by Ronn Sussberg

Organizing an event can be extremely rewarding. Whether the event is small and intimate, or large and filled with festivities, picking out the decorations, the colors in which to purchase decor and delegating the order of festivities so that they all fit together in an extremely fun and joyous occasion for others to enjoy can be very fulfilling!

Melanie Haselmayr, author of a Forbes article, shares some of her favorites tools to plan events that are fun for everyone. First is Pinterest. Pinterest is a great way to gather creative inspiration. There are thousands of images to spark ideas for your event. There are many images of event décor, design and themes.

Evernote makes taking notes and planning more organized. You can compile images, text and even web pages in Evernote. Each can be categorized and tagged as well.

Slack is an easy and effective method of communication. It is essentially an email in text form, allowing communication among anyone else part of your planning team including outside vendors.

If you want to share photos among a large number of people, tell them to download Capsule and upload their photos there. Capsule allows sharing of photos for everyone!

If everyone needs to coordinate a meeting, Doodle provides a way for many people to plug in times that work and don’t work and then spits out potential times that work for everyone.

Planning Pod is designed for event planners and offers over two dozen event-management tools. It is intended to compile all planning details in one space. Blossom is a project-management tool designed to share parts of your planning with certain people. It was originally designed to keep track of product development at tech companies but serves well for managing events too. You can create “cards” for each event task and move them to a different stage once the task is completed. You can even add a “client approval” step.

Bizzabo is a way to add tickets and invitations to a website. It also keeps track of what people are saying on social media about your event. On the day of the event, the app allows for pushing notifications to attendees about any delays or changes to the program.
